1375416 Cross-linking nitrogen-containing polymers MONSANTO Ltd 18 Oct 1972 [9 Nov 1971] 51951/71 Heading C3P An elastomeric diene polymer containing pendant nitrogen atom-containing groups is cross-linked by compounding it with an organic compound of a metal capable of complex formation with at least two of the nitrogen atoms. The cross-links can be broken by heating to a temperature at which the polymer flows freely, so that the composition can be prepared and moulded at such a temperature, but re-form on cooling. Exemplified polymers are elastomeric copolymers of 4-vinylpyridine, butadiene and optionally styrene. Many suitable metal compounds are mentioned, salts and complexes of nickel and zinc being preferred. Examples describe the use of nickel hexanoate, acetylacetonate and dibutyldithiocarbamate, the bis-(2-mercaptobenzothiazole) complexes of nickel and zinc and the bis-(2-mercaptobenzoxazole) complex of nickel.
