Wastes of the group comprising synthetic plastics and rubber are thermally disposed of by cracking at temperatures between 250 DEG and 450 DEG C. The cracking may be carried out in the presence of an auxiliary medium which is in the liquid state at the reaction temperature and capable of dissolving the wastes and/or the cracking products at least partially. The thermal decomposition may be accelerated by the addition of catalysts.
