The invention relates to benzyl-N-methyl carbamate in which at least one of the phenyl ring positions is substituted with at least one halogen atom and/or at least one nitro group. Compounds claimed per se are 3-chlorobenzyl N-methylcarbamate, 4-chloro-benzyl N-methylcarbamate, 3 - bromobenzyl N - methylcarbamate, 3,4-dichlorobenzyl N-methylcarbamate, 3 - nitro - 4 - chlorobenzyl N - methylcarbamate. The compounds may be prepared by reacting a suitably substituted benzyl alcohol with methyl isocyanate preferably in an inert solvent and in the presence of a tertiary amine or organo tin catalyst. Alternatively, the compounds may be prepared by reacting a suitably substituted benzyl alcohol with phosgene to form the corresponding chloroformate which is reacted with methyl amine.
