A longitudinally-slotted, spreadable wallplug 3 is rigidly secured in a bore, e.g. in. soft, porous masonry 1, by hardenable adhesive 5, Fig. 4 (not shown), which is introduced into the bore (before the plug is inserted) in a frangible container made of flexible plastics material. Fig. 1 (not shown), and is compressed into the surrounding material by driving in the plug so that the container is burst. To prevent the adhesive entering the plug, its slots are sealed by a U-shaped strip 6, Fig. 2 (not shown). A similar U-shaped strip 7, Fig. 5 (not shown), has cross-pieces at its edges to guide the plug into the bore 2 and is connected to a container 4a made of plastics material. In the latter case, the base of the U may be a disc, Fig. 6 (not shown), for lying transversely of the bore 2. The U-strip 7 may be welded to or interlocked with the container 4a and its ends extend from the bore to guide the plug.
