1398885 Inertia reel AUTOFLUG GmbH 6 Sept 1972 [9 Sept 1971] 41401/72 Heading A3V An inertia-locking reel for a vehicle seat belt comprises a fixed rachet ring 7 and a toothed pawl disc 6 rotatably mounted on a pivot pin 12 eccentrically located at one end of the reel shaft 2 such that on sudden belt withdrawal the inertia of disc 6 displaces the disc about the pin 12 causing the tooth 9 of the disc positively to engage the steep flank of one of the ratchet teeth 17 on the ring 7 and thereby lock the reel, displacement of the disc 6 being limited by abutment of a pin 14 on the end of shaft 2 against one end of a slot 13 in the disc, but on the occurrence of excessive forces in a collision the pin is broken off allowing further pivoting of the disc to provide additional locking of the reel by the frictional engagement of the sloping flank of tooth 9 with that of the ratchet tooth 17 behind. A weighting element 8 displaces the centre of mass of the disc 6 from its axis of rotation. A spring 21 determines the threshold belt acceleration that causes initial locking of the reel, the spring being received in a member 20 whose angular position relative to the shaft 2 is adjustable.
