1327966 Rail vehicle suspensions BRITISH RAILWAYS BOARD 7 Jan 1972 [13 Jan 1971] 1682/71 Heading B7L A railway vehicle comprises a vehicle body 10 mounted on an anti-tilt platform 14 which is in turn mounted on a wheel set frame 12 by means of a lateral suspension e.g. a spring 13 permitting the platform 14 to move laterally under centrifugal force by an amount dependent on the stiffness of the spring 13, the body 10 being pivotally connected by way of a pivot 15 to permit tilting of the body 10 about a tilt centre 16 in dependence on the movement of the platform 14, bump stops 21 on the wheel set 12 co-operating with a stop 19 carried by a signal rod 20 to limit the tilting movement of the body 10, the signal rod 20 being moved in response to changes in tilt detected by a device 18 so that overall the tilt of the body 10 is constrained within the allowable space envelope. Thus in Fig. 1 as the body 10 tilts as shown the bump stop 19 is driven to right by a distance corresponding to the lateral movement of the pivot 15, thus restricting the combined movements due to the lateral shift of the platform 14 and tilt of the body to that which is allowable within the space envelope for the track. In a further embodiment, Fig. 2, an anti-tilt platform 22 is connected to the body 10 by a pivot 15 and carries a lever 24 connected by rods 17, 20 to a lever arm 23 which carries the pivot 15 and to the bump stop 19 respectively. In further alternatives the rod 17 may be connected directly to the body 10 and the lever 24 may be in the form of a bell-crank and a series of two interconnected bell-cranks may be used. A damper (not shown) is desirably mounted between the bump stops 19 and 21 to damp lateral movements of the platform 14 or 22.
