1347414 Lubricants CHEVRON RESEARCH CO 24 Feb 1972 [26 Feb 1971 1 June 1971] 8703/72 Heading C5F [Also in Division C3] Lubricating oil compositions comprise antivarnish additives containing only C, H, O and N and having (a) a thickening power of 50 to 150 SUS, (b) an equivalent weight based on N of 500 to 15,000 and (c) an infra-red spectrum containing distinguishing absorbance peaks at 1590-1600 cm.SP-1/SP, 1650-1660 cm.SP-1/SP and 1710- 1725 cm.SP-1/SP, which may be obtained by reacting a primary or secondary amine with an oxidized atactic ethylene/propylene copolymer containing 45 to 65 mole per cent ethylene and 55 to 35 mole per cent propylene, having a thickening power of 50 to 150 SUS and an infra-red spectrum containing distinguishing absorbance peaks at 1370-1380 cm.SP-1/SP, 1460-1470 cm.SP-1/SP and 1710-1725 cm.SP-1/SP, and which is either (1) a mechanically degraded and oxidized or (2) a hydroperoxidized atactic ethylene/propylene copolymer. The oil may be a paraffinic, naphthenic or mixed base mineral oil, a polyolefin, alkylated aromatic hydrocarbon, polyalkylene oxide, aromatic ether or silicone; and the compositions may also contain conventional detergents, rust inhibitors and antioxidants. Examples describe compositions comprising paraffinic neutral oil, zinc dialkyl dithiophosphates and additives prepared by masticating ethylene/ propylene copolymers in the presence of air or hydroperoxidizing such copolymers with air in the presence of azodiisobutyronitrile, and reacting the oxidized copolymers with diethylene triamine, the compositions optionally containing overbased calcium sulphonate, carbonated sulphurized calcium phenate and a polyisobutenyl succinimide.
