1324068 Gripping tools LA TELEMECANIQUE ELECTRIQUE 18 May 1971 [26 May 1970] 15407/71 Heading B4W [Also in Divisions B3 and H2] A mechanism for cutting and stripping insulated wires comprises a pair of knives 9, 10 (Fig. 2) on a shearing block 7 rigidly secured to a support 1, a wire-cutting blade 25 on a movable shearing block 24 and stripping knives 28, 29 mounted on side arms 26, 27 of the block 24, the side arms being rotatable about pivots 30, 31 on the block and being biased against such rotation by a spring 32. The block 24 is moved by means of extensions 21 of handles 3, 4, which are biased apart by springs 5, 6 and have pivot pins 35, the pins moving in slots 36 in struts 33, 34 which are connected to the side arms 26, 27. A wire (F Fig. 6, not shown) is laid in arcuate grooves 16, 18 or 17, 19 in the block 7 and upon moving the, handles together (Fig. 7, not shown) the block 24 first engages the block 7, the blade 25 cuts the wire, and knives 9, 28 and 10, 29 cut the insulation, the pivot pins 35 moving freely within the slots 36. Upon further approach of the handles (Fig. 8, not shown) the pivot pins 35 engage the struts 33, 34, and the stripping knives 28, 29 are moved away from the block 24, which remains stationary, thus stripping the wire ends. The knives 9, 10 each comprise a pair of semicircular cutting edges, 12, 13 (Fig. 4) and 14, 15 respectively, which co-operate with corresponding semicircular edges on knives 28, 29 to out the insulation of wires of different diameters. A pivotally-mounted finger 37 is spring-biased towards the block 7 to assist in the retention of the wire (F) in one of the grooves. Notches 41 are provided in jaws on the handles so that when the handles are completely squeezed together metal ferrules can be crimped on to the stripped ends of wires. The mechanism may be benchmounted and/or power-operated.
