Isolating isovaleric acid esters - by chromatographing extracts of valeriana-ceae plants

(A) Three esters of isovalerianic acid, having the formulae:- (I) R1=R2=isovaleroxy (II) 5,6-dihydro-(I) (III) R1/R2=isovaleroxy; R2/R1=acetoxyisovaleroxy are isolated from Valeriana spp. (B) Sedative compns. contng. the above. The roots or rhizomes are extra. 30 deg. with a lipophilic solvent in the presence of acid (pref. 2-6 C COOH) at pH 3-7. The concd. ext. is dissolved in a carboxylic acid and extra. with a lipophilic solvent to remove oils and fats, then the required esters are extra. after diln. with water. Finally the products are purified by chromatography on partially deactivated alumina.
