The high velocity carrier gas laden with the material to be dried/cooled is fed tangentially along the outer vertical wall of a cyclone ring chamber and the product extracted by a tangential outlet from below the floor and on the wall of the central tube of the ring. To improve the particle distribution near the inlet, preventing bunching, agglomeration etc., auxiliary gas is fed in through openings in the floor of the ring near the main inlet, from a plenium chamber below the floor. The auxiliary gas streams are inclined to the vertical by sloping the holes or by deflector plates.
