Improved process consists in polymerising butadiene alone (or alkyl homologue or halogen derivs.) in aqs. emulsion in the first stage to give an elastomeric polymer, subjecting the copolymer to graft copolymsn. in the second stage (esp. with styrene) and mixing the graft copolymer in a third stage as above. (a) one-stage formation of elastomer emulsion under controlled conditions (b) minimal amts. of emulsifying agent used in the first stage improves transparency of polymer (c) products have high impact str., high gloss, low water absorption and improved colour (d) mouldings have high gloss surface suitable for electroplating (e) products have excellent flow properties without use of lubricants.
