A battery charging circuit for regulating the charging of a battery B comprises a rectifying bridge having three controlled silicon rectifiers DC 1 -DC 3 and three uncontrolled silicon rectifiers D 1 -D 3 through which bridge the battery is charged from an alternator A, the controlled rectifiers DC 1 -DC 3 being controlled according to the state of charge of the battery B by means of a vibrator K, the coil of which is connected across the battery B and the contact i thereof in series with the exciting circuit of the control electrode of the controlled rectifiers DC 1 -DC 3 . The diodes d 1 -d 3 and the resistors R 1 -R 3 are for protection of the controlled rectifiers against inverse voltages and excessive currents, respectively. In other embodiments the polarities of the diodes may be reversed and saturable reactors may be used in the exciting circuits of the control electrodes of the controlled diodes. A device for limiting the discharge of gas by the battery may be associated with the circuit. In yet another embodiment the rectifying bridge comprises uncontrolled rectifiers, the output of which charges the battery by way of a solid state rectifier having two control electrodes, one to initiate conduction and the other to terminate conduction thus to regulate the charging of the battery.
