3:3-Diacyloxy propene of formula: or 1:3-diacyloxy-1-propene of formula: R-CO-O-HC=CH-CH2-OCOR (where R is 1-4C alkyl) or a mixture thereof, is reacted with HCN at 20-250 degrees C, pref. 40-100 degrees C, in the presence of e.g. a crystalline complex from a CuI halide and a nitrile. The mixture of cis- and trans-1-acetoxy-3-cyano- 1 -propene obtained is a useful inter. in org. synthesis.
