1,093,493. Rotary mass-flowmeters. PLESSEY-UK Ltd. June 10, 1964 [June 21, 1963], No.24739/63. Heading F1F. A rotary mass-flowmeter comprising a stationary deflector means 10 imparting a swirl to the fluid to be measured, a speed rotor 4 having axially extending blades 11 for measuring the rate of swirl thus produced, and a torqueresponsive rotor 5 having axially extending blades 12 for measuring torque produced by the swirling movement, wherein the mass-flow is determined by the quotient of the two measurements, includes surfaces at the inlet and outlet end of each rotor outside the main flow-path equal in area to the cross-sectional area of the flow-path so that the axial thrusts acting on each rotor are substantially balanced. Stationary fairing sections 2, 3 and a stationary flanged partition 7 between the rotors are formed with recesses to provide chambers 14, 15, 16, 17 to which pressure fluid is admitted. Chambers 14, 17 are subjected to the pressure between the rotors conveyed through a duct 18 and the chambers 15, 16 to the pressure upstream and downstream of the rotors respectively conveyed through ducts 21, 22. The rotors are supported in sapphire bearings.
