1,125,786. Hydropneumatic shock-absorbers. BOFORS A.B. 11 Nov., 1965 [14 Nov., 1964], No. 47970/65. Heading F2S. In a track-laying vehicle, Fig. 1 (not shown), each end running wheel (3, 4) or (9, 10) for the two side tracks such as (2) is supported on one arm of a bell-crank lever (13, 24) or (32, 33), Fig. 2 (not shown), the other arm of which is coupled by a piston-rod, such as (14) for the lever (13), to an hydraulic piston-and-cylinder damping unit (15, 26) or (34, 35) each of which is connected by a conduit such as (16) or (17) to a pneumatic spring support unit (17, 28), or (36, 37). The conduits at each side of the vehicle such as (16, 17) are connected by conduits (18, 29) and (38, 39) to a common safety valve unit (19), (40), each of which is connected to, and mounted upon, an oil supply container (20). The conduits (18, 29) and (38, 39) are each connected, by way of a control valve (22, 31) or (43, 44), to a pump (23). The safety valve (19), which is the same as valve (40), comprises, as shown, a body having one-way valves 47, 45, which control the flow of fluid from the conduits 18, 29 to a valve chamber 46 which leads to an annular chamber around a spring-loaded valve 48 which is pressed against a valve seat 49 and which controls the flow of oil to the container 20. The valve member is urged upwardly by the fluid-pressure in the annular chamber acting upon a lower annular face 50 and downwardly to augment the spring 55, by the same fluid-pressure acting, through a duct 57 in the valve, a constriction 54, and a pressure space 53 upon an upper face 54. The space 53 is also connected to the oil container 20 by way of an auxiliary spring-loaded valve 58 and bores 59, 61 and a space 60 in the valve 48. One of the valves 45, 47, say the valve 47, as shown, opens at a predetermined high pressure of about 150 km./square cm. due, e.g. to a vehicle obstruction (62), Fig. 1 (not shown), the oil pressure build up acting upon the face 50 of the valve and propagating through the duct 51 and the constriction 52 and the space 53 to act equally upon the upper face 54 and the valve 58. The latter yields so that fluid flows from the space 53 to the container 20 through the hollow valve 48, the rapid decreases in pressure in the oil space 53 allowing the valve 48 to rise until the pressure in the space slowly equalizes through the constriction 52, and the valve member is returned to its closed position.
