The speed of direct positive emulsions comprising silver halide grains having absorbed on their surface an electron acceptor or a blue speed increasing (BSI) compound, the halide of which is at least 50 mole per cent chloride comprises adding to the emulsion either an amount of a water-soluble bromide or amounts of a water-soluble bromide and a water-soluble iodide such that the speed of the emulsion is increased. Specified iodides and bromide are ammonium, K, Li, Na, Cd and Sr salts. The emulsion may be a covered grain emulsion as described in Specification 1, 151, 781 and 1, 186, 718. The emulsions may comprise electron acceptors as described in Specifications 1, 186, 714, 1, 186, 715 and 1, 186, 716, compounds as described in Specification 1, 186, 718 and may be regular mono-disperse emulsions which are fogged as described in Specifications 1, 186, 711 and 1, 186, 712.
