Rubber surfaces are modified by coating with polyolefins of low melt indices. Application is preferably before vulcanisation of the rubber. The polyolefin is applied as a film, powder etc. and the assembly is pressed at 2kg/cm2 using temperature at least equal to the melting point of the polymer. One or more layers may be applied and different polyolefins or one polyolefin of more than melt index may be used. The adhesion of the coating is excellent. The abrasion resistance, chemical resistance and friction characteristics of the rubber surface are improved. The coated surface is heat-weldable.
