In the gas-cored reactor the walls of the reaction chamber are maintained at a temp. between the m.pt. and b.pt. of the uranium fuel used and the plasma is set into rotation by the Lorentz forces, a chain reaction being maintained and the energy released by fission being extracted by an axial stream of working gas. To stabilise the operation the fuel is either prevented from condensing on the chamber wall or its condensation is controlled to a predetermined level by introducing an auxiliary gas into the plasma esp. Hg or Xe, and due to relative atomic weights under the varied degree of ionization the atoms of the supplementary gas move outwards to the reactor chamber wall to form a shielding layer between the wall and the plasma. The relative atomic weights satisfy one of two equations as a result of the condition in which the plasma is maintained.
