Strengthening metal parts - partic increasing the strength of valves in ic engines

Structural components which are subjected to thermal stresses, e.g. valves for I.C. engines, are strengthened by melting the surface layer of the structural member down to a limited depth by electron beam irradiation. The method increases the strength of the part without reducing ductility.
