A pipe (11) for cooling medium e.g. liquid nitrogen or liquid helium, is in good thermal contact with a cooling plate (7) carrying activated charcoal. Heat insulating supports (9) carried by the plate (7) prevent contact of the plate (7) with the wall (14) of the final image chamber. The inlet and outlet ends (1, 2) of the pipe (11) are connected by sleeves (5) of low thermal conductivity e.g. of stainless steel to a flange (3) connected in vacuum-tight manner to the wall of the final image chamber, whereby the flange (3) is thermally insulated from the ends of the pipe (11). The surface of the plate (7) available for heat exchange is appreciably increased by the presence of the activated charcoal.
