Metal chlorides, esp. Al, Zn or Zr, are made, according to the parent patent, by placing the metal(s) in a chamber suspended in a reactor; through which excess, gaseous Cl2 is blown. The temp. is maintained above the evaporation point of the highest evaporating product. This technique is now extended to elemental Si, if desired in combination with other metals, esp. Al, Zn or Zr, to form SiCl4 or mixtures of SiCl4 with other metal chlorides. The process is highly efficient, economic and esp. suitable for prodn. of SiCl4/TiCl4 mixtures to make TiO2 pigments - the size and props. being modified by the presence of SiCl4.
