process for the production of butylbenzolhydroperoxid and its use for the production of phenol, acetophenon and methylaethylketon

Title cpd. is produced by oxidising sec butylbenzene in which the isobutylbenzene content is less than 1% (pref. 0.5%) and which essentially free of S or olefinic substances. The reactions temp is 25 to 140 degrees C and O2 or air or O2 contg. inert gases are used as the oxidising agent. The partial pressure of the O2 is pref. =50 mm Hg. The reaction maybe continuously maintained by adding further quantities of starting substances and removing the reaction prod. at a predetermined rate. Sec butyl benzene is removed from the prods. by distn. the peroxide removed using an acid and the soln neutrallised. The reaction prods are sec. butylbenzene hydroperoxide, acetophenone and methyl ethyl phenyl carbinole. The butylbenzene hydroperoxide may be treated with acid to produce phenol and methyl ethyl ketone. Large scale prodn is possible.
