Tampon mfr - producing tampons with high absorptive capacity and not requiring an applicator

In the mfr. of a tampon esp. from a flat elongated body of absorbent material such as wadding, on which a partial covering is applied and which is then folded and hot pressed, (a) a covering of a sealable non-woven fibre fleece is applied with thermoplastic components at least on a section of one side of the body and introduced into the interior of the tampon body by folding, before or during pressing; (b) the resultant folded body having a rectangular, pref. elongated or square section is subjected to a first pressing in the direction of its longer side with compression also of the inserts now present in the fibre fleece, and thereafter is subjected to a second pressing in a cross sectional plane perpendicular to the direction of the first pressing, in such a way that a radially symmetric, circular or polygonal cross sectional shape results, and (c) =1 hot pressing is carried out so that thermoplastic components of the fibre fleece produce a bond in the interior of the folded body between the folded together sections and a compacted elastic framework.
