Preservation of boar sperm - at 13-17 degreesc

Boar sperm is preserved by diluting the ejaculate of a boar with a warm (39 degrees C) soln. contg. glucose, a buffer system, antibiotics, EDTA and KCl, dilution being 1:2 to 1:10 v/v, and cooling and diluted soln. to 13-17 degrees C (pref. 15 degrees C) over 4 hrs. The procedure enables boar sperm to be kept for =4 days (storage in e.g. expanded polystyrene containers to provide insulation) while maintaining a motility of =50% (at 39 degrees C). Boar sperm preserved in this manner generally gives litters of 10-15 piglets.
