Paper or wallpaper strip inflammability is reduced by brushing or painting on and impregnating with a dispersion of 70 pts. copolymer of commercially available thermoplastic polyvinyl acetate, 30 pts. copolymer of a commercially available vinyl chloride, 10 pts. pigments and 500 pts. water; heating up to dispersion flowing point and leading to a sudden cooling device, with e.g. a 60-80 degrees C temp. difference. Above 400 degrees C, wallpapers treated develop a light foam layer generating a non-toxic odourless gas which does not burn up to 750 degrees C, thus preventing flame-spreading and smoke-formation.
