Washing compsns. contain =1 surfactant, =1 builder of the polymeric phosphate type, a sequestering agent, an alkaline substance and an alkali metal or ammonium salt of (I) a polymeric vinylcarboxylic acid is a copolymer of methyl-vinyl or ethyl-vinyl ether with N-alkyl maleic acid hemiamide contg. 4-18C in the alkyl gp., the molar ratio of the ether to the hemiamide being 1:10 to 3:1, the mol. wt. being 2000-300000. I is added in an amt. of 0.1-10 wt.% pref. as its sodium salt and is esp. effective as a soil-suspending agent in the washing of textiles contg. synthetic fibres, esp. polyester and polyolefine fibres. For mixed textiles carboxymethyl cellulose is added to the compsn. to increase effectiveness of I as soil-suspending agent w.r.t. the cellulosic fibres.
