Cpds. of formula (I): (where each of R1 and R2 is H or halogen, Me is methyl and R1 can also be an aliphatic gp.) are prepd. by reacting a cpd. (II) with a cpd. (III): (where X is halogen) in the presence of =10 wt.% FeCl3, based on (III), as Friedel-Crafts catalyst. (I) are intermediates for dyes and pesticides.
