The oil is passed over 2 or more layers of separate catalyst within a single reactor, the first having a hydrogenating function, and subsequent catalysts a mainly hydrocracking-isomerising function, depending on the active content or the carrier acidity in the catalysts. Reaction heat is carried away by controlled injection of H2 or hydrocarbon fractions into the reactor. The feedstock is pref. a paraffinic or naphthene-aromatic oil with V.I. of 35-50 and is passed with fresh and recycled H2 into the reactor at 0.5-1 v/v/h under 150-180 atmos at 410-440 degrees C.
