Rolled stock throughout is imporved by adjusters positioned behind fine- or medium-fine iron rolling trains and the length yielded corresponds to the full length of the cooling bed. The speed of alignment after introduction of the rolled bar heat into the straightening machine is increased, and the rolled bars are sub-divided into groups in the separating device, which are consignment lenghts. Prior to separation, layers of the bars are formed and one layer is advanced in alignment to a multi-length separating position stop. In accordance with the measured actual length of each separate bar, a stop is actuated either behind a first separating device and/or behind the following one to retain the selected bar in accordance with a predetermined adjusting programme. Rolled bars are cut by a finished-length separator so that their lengths are a multiple of the ensuing consignment length. During passage of the rolled bars through the adjusting mechanism, the layer of rods formed prior to separation is held behind the last separator.
