1390114 Olefin oxidation catalysts SUMITOMO CHEMICAL CO Ltd 13 June 1972 [14 June 1971] 27633/72 Heading B1E [Also in Division C2] Oxidation catalyst for use in the preparation of acrolein from propylene and oxygen comprises (a) a catalytically-active composition having the empirical formula: wherein X is one or more of magnesium, manganese and cobalt and Y is one or more of copper, calcium, strontium, zinc, cadmium, tin and lead and wherein a is 12, b is 0.1 to 5, c is 0.1 to 12, d is 0.1 to 12, e is greater than 0 but not more than 1, f is 0 to 5, g is 0 to 12, h is 0.1 to 12 and i, the value of which depends on the number of atoms other other than oxygen present in the composition, usually is 36 to 112 and, optionally, (b) carrier material, for example selected from silica, alumina, titania and silicon carbide, in an amount constituting less than 90 weight per cent, for example from 5 to 90 weight per cent, of the catalyst. The specification gives details relating to the preparation of the catalyst by a generally conventional procedure. Examples relate to catalysts which contain phosphorus (as a component of the catalytically-active composition) and silica (as support material) and wherein constituent (X plus Y) is either Ca or Sr or Zn or Cd or Sn or Pb or Ca+Zn or Zn+Sn or Mg+Zn or Mg+Cu+Zn or Mn+Cu+Zn or Co+Cu+ Zn or Mg+Co+Zn; comparison examples relate to catalyst containing molybdenum, bismuth, iron, nickel, phosphorus, silica (as support material) and either (i) neither thallium nor component X nor component Y or (ii) cobalt but neither thallium nor component Y or (iii) either Ca or Sr or Zn or Cd or Pb or Zn+Cd+ Sn but neither thallium nor component X or (iv) Mg and Cu+Zn but not thallium or (v) thallium but neither component X nor component Y or (vi) thallium and zinc but not component X, the thallium being present in a proportion in excess of that proportion permitted by the empirical formula.
