Basic and ultrabasic ores, such as limonitic or serpentitic laterite may be addn. of reductants pref. C, coke and S, sulphides or sulphidising reagents, be utilised to produce metals, in partic. Co and Ni and also Zr, Hf Th and lanthanides. The ores are heated to 1400 degrees C and then cooled slowly in 100-200 degrees C steps. until solidification and then reheated to 700 degrees C upon which the complex sulphides formed during the diffusion annealing are broken down, the prods. of which are sepd. conventionally e.g. by grinding and magnetic sepn. etc. Single metals or combinations may be produced. The diffusion annealing takes 1-4 hrs.
