Benzofuryloxy alkanoic derivs of probucol - hypocholesterolemic and hypolipemic agents

Cpds. are of formula (I): (where B = straight or branched, satd or ethylenic divalent hydrocarbon of 1-5C; R1 = H or lower alkyl, R2 = methyl or ethyl, R3 = tert. amyl or tert. butyl, R4 = lower alkyl, X = H or lower alkyl). The cpds. are prepd. by esterification of the bis-(4-hydroxy phenyl thio)alkane with the appropriate benzofuryloxy alkanoic acid or its derivs. In an example 268g bis 2,2-(3,5-di tert butyl-4-hydroxy phenylthio)propane was treated with 253g. (2-methyl-5-benzofuran)-2-oxy-2-methyl propionyl chloride in triethylamine and benzene to give corresp. (I).
