Catalyst for reactants involving H2 consists of a substoichiometric Gp. III-VI metal carbide, with compsn. within the homogeneity region of the carbide phase concerned. This catalyst is used for (de)hydrogenation of an organic substance in the vapour phase or under pressure in the liquid phase. It is efficient, esp. on the industrial scale; cheap cf. noble metal catalysts (e.g. Pt and Pd); and stable mechanically and chemically.
