Removal of volatile matter from cellular material - by controlled drying

Celllar material from a fermentation broth esp. one where a hydrocarbon has been used as the source of C, opt. with other dried forms of the material is heated and at the drop in the drying rate at the end of the period of constant drying the material is heated to modify the cell protein. The product is free from undesirable colour, is of low moisture content, is easily digested as an animal food and stores well. Thus Candida novellus contg. 72% volatile matter from the fermentation of paraffins mixed with dried yeast heated at 40 degrees C in a fluid bed for 1 hr. then 2 hrs. at 100 degrees C have a material contg. 1.8% water and free from paraffin odours.
