1368477 Measuring lengths of stock material BRITISH STEEL CORP 30 Nov 1972 [3 Dec 1971] 56285/71 Heading G4H The length of pieces cut from steel strip stock 12 by a flying shear 10 is determined by counting at 40 increments of advancement of the stock over a given plural number of cutting operations. A spring mounted photo-electric rotary displacement digitizer 15 is driven by a rotor (26) making frictional engagement with the stock, permanent magnets (32) surrounding the rotor beneath a brass surface (22) over which the stock is guided to attract it to the rotor. After ten cutting operations the counter 40 is reset, its contents being passed to a store 46 where a zero offset is introduced to compensate for wear of the roller. Either the total length of the ten pieces may be displayed or the average length, by shift division and rounding the least significant figure.
