1298659 Laminates BREVETEAM SA 19 April 1971 [20 Feb 1970] 20973/71 Heading B5N [Also in Division D1] A laminate is formed by laying a fleece 2 of staple or continuous polyamide, polypropylene polyacrylic or polyester fibres on a foraminous carrier film or net 1 of polyvinyl chloride, polyamide, polyethylene, or ethylene 1 vinyl acetate copolymer and needling the fleece through the holes. The fabric is heated by hot air or steam or by a high frequency capacitor to at least the plasticizing temperature of the carrier. The hot fabric is passed between embossing roll 9, which has circular ribs (12, Fig. 2c, not shown) crossing ridges or protruding spots, and backing roll 10. In one embodiment roll 9 is heated and roll 10 is cooled, in another, both are heated and the preheater deleted, in a third embodiment roll 10 is heated to a temperature sufficient to melt the fibres needled through to the underside of the carrier. The fabric is cooled by blowing cold air at 13 or by cooling roller 10. Temperature ranges and fibre lengths and deniers are specified. The fibres are preferably orientated transverse to the machine direction alternatively a plurality of fibre layers may be used, with the fibres orientated transversely in one layer and longitudinally in another, or the layers crosslopped giving diagonal orientation of the fibres. In the latter embodiment the fabric is embossed with longitudinal and transverse lines. The carrier may comprise a lower net of viscous incompletely thermoplastic material and an upper net of thermoplastic material which is softened to adhere the fibres. A coating of adhesive may be applied to the lower side of the fabric which is then laminated to a (preferably slit) bonded fibre fleece or foam layer. The product may be stretched.
