Thereafter, disc 19, strainer plate 20 and plate 29 mounted on the upper end of tube 21 move upwardly and a cover plate 30 is also moved upwardly by plate 29 against springs 33 to place cylinder 7 in communication with conduit 3 Fig. 2 (not shown). Valve 17 is then opened to supply air under pressure to the space above plate 29, and piston 11 is caused to move downwardly, so that the moving parts take up the positions shown in Fig. 1, with the air pressure from conduit 15 being applied over the pulp. The water squeezed from the pulp passes to a vessel 39 where its volume or level after a predetermined time is measured.
