The distribution of PAE in pulp sheet could be observed by CLSM with the double stain technique for the first time. In the case of high beating degree of pulp and high amount of PAE addition, PAE tends to concentrate at fiber crossing. As a result of observing from cross section side in the reconstructed images by CLSM, PAE fixed on the pulp surface in spite of beating. The amount of PAE in pulp sheet could be quantified by SEM-EDX after modified with OsO4. The amount of PAE in pulp sheet was hardly affected with the beating degree. The amount of PAE on pulp surface could be quantified by XPS. The amount of PAE on pulp surface decreased with the increase in beating degree. Conversely, the wet-strength increased with the increase in beating degree. It was suggested that parts of PAE would fix with fine fibers generated by beating and would concentrate at fiber crossing.
