1314371 Pile fabrics R REINHARD 19 May 1970 [21 May 1969] 24189/70 Heading D1K A pile fabric is made (Figure 2) by attaching pile material 1 to the side of a ribbon 3 and then attaching adjacent ribboned pile to each other (Figure 1). In a continuous process (Figures 3, 7) fibres 1 from a beam are laid transversely across a conveyor 2 onto which are laid a number of ribbons 3 spaced apart across the width of the conveyor. Take-up rolls 4 feed the batt and ribbons to a table where it is severed into lengths by a transverse knife 6. A transportation device 7 then moves each length past a segmented roller 8 which coats with adhesive those portions of the fibres 1 which are adjacent to and on the opposite side of the ribbons 3. The device 7 then stacks the batts in a press 9 which consolidates them and produces a block of carpeting (Fig. 7) which is then severed into separate carpets along lines 11 in the centres of the ribbons 3 and 11a in the fibres between the ribbons. In Figure 5 (not shown) a ribbon is coiled to produce a circular carpet and in 6 (not shown) ribbons are coiled side-by-side on a rotating drum to produce carpeting which is subsequently cut into separate lengths. The tuft material may be of various kinds, examples of which are given.
