In the Fig. a superconducting coil 2 is connected to a voltage source 11, 12 by switch 13. The coil has a superconducting switch 5 across its terminals, and also has a transformer winding 8 connected to a load 9. To introduce a current into the coil, switch 13 is closed while switch 5 is opened. This current is stored by closing switch 5 and opening switch 13. To liberate this current the coil is rendered normally conducting while switch 5 remains superconducting; the peak power so released may be 10 Gw. The coil is a large diameter solenoid of short length, made of Nb with 40% Ti sheathed in cupro-nickel. It may be controlled by magnetic or thermal device 3, 4. The superconducting switch 5 may be a small elongate solenoid of a similar alloy, with a copper control winding 6, 7. The load may be a laser flashlamp or plasma discharge.
