1330153 Crease-resist finishing of silk KANEBO Ltd 10 Nov 1970 [10 Nov 1969 21 July 1970 30 July 1970] 53520/70 Heading DIP A crease-resistant finish is given to silk by treatment with a solution containing at least one of urea, thiourea, and an aliphatic, alicyclic or aromatic compound having at least two hydroxyl groups and a molecular weight of no more than 400; drying until the moisture content is no more than 10%; and treating with gaseous formaldehyde at a temperature of no less than 100‹C. Suitable compounds having at least two hydroxyl groups are ethylene glycol, trimethylene glycol, tetramethylene glycol, pentamethylene glycol, triethylene glycol, 1,2,6-hexanetriol, tartaric acid, glycerin, mannitol, cyclohexane-1,3-diol, cyclohexane-1, 4-diol, - cyclohexane-1,2,3-triol, 2,5-dihydroxybenzoic acid 2,4-dihydroxybenzoic acid, 1,2- dihydroxybenzoic acid, 4,6-dihydroxy-o-toluylic acid, 3,5-dihydroxytoluene and 3,5-dihydroxypropyl benzene. The solution may be in water or an organic solvent, such. as methanol or ethanol, and it may include a polymerisation catalyst such as ammonium chloride, ammonium nitrate, ammonium sulphate, magnesium chloride, zinc nitrate or 2-amino-2- methylpropanol hydrochloride. The gaseous formaldehyde may contain steam. The silk may be blended with wool (silk/wool sharkskin) or polyester fibres.
