[Also in Division D1] An emulsion polymer, used in conjunction with a crease resistant finish for textiles, comprises from 15 to 60% of at least one polymerizable mono or dicarboxylic acid and from 85 to 40% of at least one other monomer, which substances having been applied to the textile material are allowed to react in the presence of a cross-linking catalyst. The emulsion polymer is made in two polymerization stages from 10 to 90% of the total weight of all monomers but not more than 40% of the weight of monomers containing carboxylic acid groups being reacted in the first stage, whilst in the second stage the remaining proportions of monomer are reacted. Preferred polymerizable carboxylic acids are acrylic and methacrylic acids particularly when both are used. Particularly suitable copolymers are those in which up to 5% of the simple monomers forming water-insoluble homopolymers are replaced by an equal weight of one or more monomers having at least two polymerizable double bonds, e.g. multiple esters of α-# unsaturated polymerizable carboxylic acids with polyhydric alcohols. The copolymers may contain also up to 20% of polymerizable units of one or more simple monomers which form water-soluble homopolymers and which are free from carboxylic acid groups, in place of an equal weight of the simple monomers forming water-insoluble homopolymers. Suitable monomers of this kind are sodium vinyl sulphonate and salts thereof, N-vinyl pyrrolidone, N-acryloylpyrrolidone, #- hydroxalkyl amides of acrylic or methacrylic acids containing at least 2 C atoms in the alkyl radical and polymerizable betaines. Other monomers exemplified are ethyl acrylate, (meth)acrylamide, diallyl phthalate, styrene, butyl acrylate, vinyl carbazole, vinyl acetate, triallylformal, itaconic acid, butanediol monoacrylate, and sodium acrylate. The impregnating compositions also contain in the examples, N,NSP1/SP - dimethylglyoxal monoimidazolid-2-one, tetrasilicate of tallow fatty alcohol, magnesium chloride, tetrasodium salt of ethylene diamine tetracetic acid and sperm oil alcohol/ethylene oxide adduct.
