This means comprises a semicylindrical plate 3 overlying the pipe 2 and a flat plate underlying it. At intervals along the pipe-line the space 6 bounded by the semicylindrical and flat plates is supplied with air heated by gas turbines 9. This can keep the semicylindrical plate warm enough to melt falling snow. The heated air escapes through apertures in the flat plate. This melts a certain amount of lying snow such that downwardly providing edges of the semicylindrical plate are, in use, immersed in molten snow, i.e. in water. The region between these edges and the flat plate will, if the heated air is at a sufficient pressure, act as an air cushion support device for the pipe-line, preventing sinking thereof into the ambient snow.
