1444926 Road marking apparatus L EIGENMANN 7 Sept 1973 [11 Sept 1972] 42227/73 Heading E1G An apparatus for applying a road marking tape comprises a roller system 16, 18 for applying and pressing a tape 10 onto an adhesive primer layer 12, means for temporarily positioning a protective film 20 under the rollers to prevent pick-up of the adhesive and for taking up the film 20, and means for depositing a layer of powdery material 14 onto any uncovered adhesive to minimise its sticky character. The protective film may comprise a thin strip of flexible material 20 supplied from a roll 22 under rollers 16, 18 and removed from contact with the marking tape 12 by a take-up coil 24, or it may comprise a closed loop of flexible or fine mesh material circulating around rollers and cleaned by a brush engaging its outer surface. Alternatively a liquid protective film may be used and in this case the surface of the roller is continuously wetted by a sponge roller and a scraper blade removes any debris collected. Methods of metering the supply of powdery material 30 include discharge by pressurised air, by rotary slot valve, by rotating grooved roller, or by a vibrating slot.
