In the process, a sinter mixt. consisting of ores, solid fuel e.g. coke, additives and return fires is poured onto a grid after wetting to form a sinter bed in which aligned vertical holes are formed. Before the mixt. is ignited to fire it, it undergoes a preheating treatment using hot gases whose temp. and O2 content are such that the solid fule cont'd in the mixt. is not ignited.
