1439291 Transferring liquids F M C CORP 9 Jan 1974 [18 June 1973] 00946/74 Heading A4T Fluid transfer apparatus, e.g. for volatile fuels, comprises a delivery conduit leading to delivery means 84 a vapour return conduit leading from the delivery means 84, and a telescopic conduit 22 having an inlet 98 connected to the delivery means 84 and an outlet 106 for discharging the fluid into a tank T at a submerged location, the conduit 22 being retractable to a stowed position. The delivery and return conduits take the form of boom sections 16, 18 including delivery conduits 24, 40 and vapour discharge conduits 26, 42, also Fig. 2 (not shown), the sections 16, 18 being relatively pivotable horizontally by manual action and vertically by means of a pressure cylinder 60. The conduit 22 is adjustable telescopically by means of a lanyard 150 operated by a handle 166, and for delivery, is placed with a deflector 148 arranged to be submerged in the tank T to be filled. A seat 190 engages a hatch H of the tank T, rising on a pipe section 102 on so engaging to operate a contact valve assembly 88 which prevents fluid transfer in the absence of engagement. On operating the delivery means 84, fluid flows through a passageway 98 into the tank, the vapour escaping through a port 116, and passage 100 to the conduit 42 and hence to a riser pipe 34, and transfer may be terminated automatically by means of a float 200. Alternatively, Figs. 9-11 (not shown), the telescopic adjustment of the conduit 22 may be effected by a fluid-pressure cylinder (210), rack and pinion means (220) or a screw (240).
