Stable hot melt adhesive - contg. petroleum wax, resin, ethylene copolymers, boric additives and phenolic antioxidants

The compsn. comprises (1) 100 pts. petroleum wax, (2) 40-200 pts. adhesive resin, (3) 15-100 pts. of (a) an EPDM terpolymer or (b) a branched copolymer contg. ethylene, a 3-18C alpha-olefin, a bifunctional non-conjugated diene and opt. a monofunctional non-conjugated diene, (a) or (b) having a Mooney viscosity of 10-70, (4) 2.2% (based on polymer in (3)) of a boric additive i.e. boric acid, boric anhydride or boric acid esters with (cyclo) aliphatic alcohols or phenols, and (5) 2.2% (based on polymer) of phenolic antioxidants. Use of the boric and phenolic additive stabilisers the viscosity of the melt preventing viscosity variations 20% after 96 hrs. at 177-190 degrees C. By adjusting the ratio of polymer in (3) to wax and resin the viscosity can be adjusted within a range of 100-10,000 cP.
