1442705 Uranium complexes SNAMPROGETTI SpA 24 June 1974 [9 July 1973] 27990/74 Heading C2C The invention comprises a uranium (IV) mixed complex in which the uranium has a co-ordination number of 8 and which has one of the following formulae in which "Salew" is the N,NSP1/SP-ethylene-bis- (salicylideneiminate ligand; XSP1/SP is a halogen atom, XSP11/SP is selected from N-methylsalicylideneiminate, acetylacetonate and dibenzoylmethamate; B is selected from 2,2SP1/SP-dipyridyl, pyridine and tetrahydrofuran; and n is 1 or 2 depending on whether B is bidentate or unidentate to ensure that the co-ordination number of the uranium is 8. The complexes of Formula (a) above may be prepared by reacting a uranium (IV) halide with, as a chelating agent, N,NSP1/SP - ethylene - bis - (salicylideneimine) in the presence of a compound B, in a solvent, refluxing the resulting adduct and heating the refluxed adduct under vacuum, the compound B constituting part or all of the solvent medium if capable of acting as a solvent. The complexes of Formula (a) may also be made by reacting a uranium (IV) halide with a chelated complex of formula in the presence of a compound B in the presence of a solvent which may consist wholly or partly of a compound B. The uranium complex of Formula (b) may be prepared by (1) reacting a complex of formula with a compound of formula in the presence of gaseous ammonia or (ii) reacting a uranium (IV) halide with a chelated complex of formula and reacting the product with a compound of formula and gaseous ammonia.
