A system for treating exhaust gases from the incomplete combustion of hydrocarbon based fuels, esp. for removing CO, unburnt hydrocarbons and N oxides from the exhaust gases of IC engines, comprises (a) a zone for receiving the exhaust gases, with a restricted supply of O2-contg. gas (pref. air) for partial oxidn. of the exhaust gases, pref. leaving a substantial amt. of CO therein, (b) a zone contg. a chemical reducing material for redn. of nitrogen oxides to N2, and (c) a zone with a supply of O2-contg. gas for complete oxidn. of the exhaust gases. The zones are pref. surrounded with a refractory insulating material to reduce heat losses. The heat from the exhaust gases near zone (c) is pref. transferred to the air supplies of zones (a) and (c). The partial oxidn. in (a) ensures a reducing atmosphere in zone (b).
