[Also in Divisions C1, C3 and C4] Solid particles, are encapsulated in synthetic polymer by carrying out the dispersion polymerisation of a monomer in an organic liquid in which the monomer is soluble and the resulting polymer is insoluble and in the presence of a stabiliser for the resulting insoluble polymer, the organic liquid also containing dispersed solid particles having adsorbed thereon a polymer which is insoluble in the organic liquid and on which there is formed an encapsulating layer of the insoluble polymer produced by the dispersion polymerisation, the encapsulated particles being stabilised in the organic liquid by the stabiliser for the encapsulating polymer. Examples describe the encapsulation of pigments e.g. particles of TLO 2 , red iron oxide, and vegetable black, pesticides, herbicides, blowing agents, catalysts, metal powders, the adsorbed polymers being a copolymer of methyl methacrylate with methacrylic acid; a polyvinyl pyrrolidone backbone with pendent polymethyl - methacrylate chains and a copolymer of vinyl acetate with acrylic acids; encapsulating polymers being copolymers of methyl methacrylate with methacrylic acid and vinyl acetate with acrylic acid; polyvinyl acetate; and polyvinyl chloride.
